Kids on Tour

The Kids in the Hall launch a 30 city North American tour. They promise that 90% of the shows will be new material. Although they're unlikely to hit Britain, far less Scotland it's good to know they're back out there again, and they're even talking about doing another film.

The tour trailer is down below, with a short Q & A from their appearance at the San Fransisco Sketchfest in January, explaining how they were complicit in the death of Kurt Cobain below that.

The New Film of the Year

I think I've already posted twice so far this year about the best film of 2008. We have another title holder. Lars and the Real Girl was just fantastic. Scenes that you could not divert your eyes from if you tried. It's a funny and tender film and Ryan Gosling is just outstanding as Lars.

Along with his performance in the equally excellent Half Nelson he's fast becoming one of my favourite actors. He brings warmth, sensitivity and vulnerability to his character and helps you forget that the woman he's in love with is actually a doll.

Go see it if you get the chance. Trailer is down below.

The End of the Comedy Festival

Last night was the final night of the Glasgow Comedy Festival. This year was the first one in the last 4 that YOMG haven't done anything. We're not kicking ourselves over it. It's debatable how much good it would have done us, though I'm sure it would have prompted us to write a couple of decent sketches, but anyway, although there was no Glue I decided to get involved this year and help out on a few shows.

I met more people this year than I had any year I was actually performing. I got to know some comedy folk much better and made a few new pals along the way. Even although we weren't on I still had a lot of people telling me how much they like YOMG.

I've had the odd testing experience over the course of the three weeks, not least having to hold up Jim Jeffries' sold out crowd as I fumbled around to put sound on his show's climactic DVD. Then after the late show someone nicked it out the machine.

As previously blogged Glenn Wool was outstanding, a real lesson in how to perform comedy and work a room. Bruce Morton, Paul Tonkinson and Stu Who? all put in excellent shows.

However the undoubted best thing at the festival for me was last night's Limmy's Show at Oran Mor. I laughed throughout 80% of the 100 minute running time. And when I wasn't laughing I was eagerly anticipating the next laugh. Limmy looked like he was having fun on stage and I think that proved infectious for the audience, although to be honest a lot of people in the room were acting like Santa was about to come down the chimney before the show started.

His material is really inventive and he worked the audience like an old pro. This show is also where I made my only performing contribution to the festival. A couple of weeks ago I went out with Limmy and shot a video in the Botanic Gardens which formed part of the show. I did enjoy the couple of people round about me doing a double take when they realised I was the guy on the screen. As I was sitting down the front I was asked to stand up and take a bow, which I sheepishly did.

From there I went to the last night show at Agenda, which was a really good night. I think it's now almost passed into folklore already, but Bruce Morton setting the string on a balloon alight and then telling a joke in French while it burned up and popped was the moment everyone was talking about. Scott Agnew replicating it later in Alan Anderson's kitchen was just as entertaining, even if not everyone found that to be the case.

So all in all I've enjoyed it even although my performing contribution was somewhat limited. My set of photographs over the three weeks can be found here.

Glasgow's Alright for Fighting

Thankfully I no longer work in Maryhill. So that means that I don't need to get the number 40 bus. On Saturday however I found myself on a particularly packed 40. Unsurprisngly a rumpus started at the front. A passenger objected to having to push his way through the standees in order to get off. He made his objections known to the bus driver.

"Have I to just let folk wait on the next bus so you're not inconvenienced pal?"

"You're a prick of a bus driver."

"I'll come out this cab and punch your head in."

"Come on then get off the bus and I'll do you."

The passenger got off, closely followed by the bus driver.

"I'll fucking have you..."

He was then held back by another passenger.

"Leave it mate! He's not worth it."

You haven't ridden public transport until your driver's left the bus to assault a passenger.

Yesterday was of course St Patrick's Day. If there's one thing Glasgow doesn't need it's a night exclusively devoted to bams. I was walking up Argyle Street when I spotted a guy and a girl in a war of words with another guy.

The first guy getting ready for a scrap made to take off not his jacket, but his St Patrick's Day flag he was wearing over his back.

"Here haud ma flag."

He was told to step aside by the lassie who assured him that she was handling it. And handle it she did as she made for the terrified guy.

"This isnae aboot Catholics! This celebration's fur everybidy ya cunt."

Only 364 days until it next rolls around.

Comedy Festival Highlight

Out of all the shows I've seen at the Glasgow Comedy Festival so far, and there have been a few, undoubtedly the best one was Glenn Wool @ Maggie Mays tonight. Down to play for an hour he went on for double that. He told many hilarious stories, among the best were the differences between Drunk Glenn and Sober Glenn, how the 2005 European Cup final helped along his divorce and his classic comeback to a 'I fucked your mum' heckle. There he is there down below on YouTube. I can only advise you go see him when he plays the Edinburgh Festival in August.

Literally...

On Alan Brazil's Talk Sport radio show this morning he was discussing with various guests why Celtic lost to Barcelona in the Champions' League last night. I was just waking up so I didn't catch who it was, but I caught what he said. In fact I think it was that that woke me up.

"It was literally Everest for Celtic."

Celtic crashed out of Europe last night after UEFA enforced a cruel rule change on the Scottish champions. Having lost to Barcelona by 3 goals to 2 in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 match, Euro chiefs ordered the Parkhead side to climb the highest mountain on earth in order to progress.

Bhoys gaffer Gordon Strachan was typically pragmatic after the loss. "Nakamura is great with a dead ball, but I think we have to face facts - he's not a mountaineer."

With Mark Wilson caught out by a trademark disguise avalanche by Ronaldinhio early on the Hoops found themselves clinging to the fixed ropes for much of the ascent. Unable to field their cup-tied new sherpa signings the Glasgow side will have to wait for next term to conquer European football's highest summit.

You wonder why some folk get paid to talk for a living.

How Old is Mae West?

I spent this evening at the Theatre Royal watching the stage version of The 39 Steps. I have to say it was a fantastic production, very, very funny.

It follows the script of the Hitchcock film version pretty closely, but the comic techniques used in staging makes it a real hoot. Lots of deliberate mistakes and knowingly pathetic attempts to recreate spectacular moments jolly the show along. There are many fun uses of silhouette too.

The cast are extremely impressive with the 4 actors playing 139 roles between them. It runs until Saturday and is well worth going to see.

Sent a Text...

I was just looking through the 'Pish archives there and noticed a post about a David O'Doherty show, which got me looking to see if my favourite song of his was on YouTube. And it is. Down below is DOD performing Sent a Text to the Person the Text was About.

The End of Whiskerino

The four-month long beard growing experience that was Whiskerino ended on Friday.

If you want you can have a look at my photo archive. Or check out Ronnie's or Graham's. There was a collection of great photographs by all of the contestants along the way. Some of whom have too many great photographs and photographic concepts to link to only one.

Vaginarino also showed off some really good pics, and the fact that it turned into Claire's personal showcase was no bad thing, as she and Ronnie created some nice photos.

All in all it was good fun, despite some of you out there wondering how on earth that could be so. The next Whiskerino is in 2009 and who can say if I'll be back for that, but in the meantime I'll think about a moustache for Moustache May.
